This early drawing, full of his vibrant love of nature and animated patterning, was executed during the period Burchfield referred to as his "Golden Year." He later told his dealer that "Violets* was one of his personal favorites and asked him to submit it to RISD for purchase consideration. Like Charles Demuth and John Marin, Burchfield painted primarily in watercolor and gouache throughout his career.
