The British-born Buttersworth moved to West Hoboken, New Jersey in 1850, and the nearby New York harbor served for nearly half a century as the locus for his marine paintings, many of which were lithographed by Nathaniel Currier or distributed through the American Art Union. This painting depicts the start of a race with yachts sailing south out of the harbor channel. The circular structure on the left is Castle William on Governor's Island. The smoke surrounding the castle indicates a cannon salute to the two American naval warships, which pass to the left on their way into the harbor.
