Inscription verso, bottom right:X4118 [Japanese Characters]Poem: Kinou made/yoso ni omoishi/ayamegusa/kyô waga yado no/tsuma to miru kanaThe iris-until yesterday I thought she was distant but today she and I are oneThe iris, symbolizing a woman, the man believed distant; today she is his wife. The Kobayashi botanist states that the flower in Hiroshige's image is not ayame as in the poem, but hanashôbu.
