The Genius of a Sacred Space
About
In classical Roman religion, a genius loci was the protective spirit of a place. The Radeke Memorial Garden, a central area of the Museum, was originally conceived as a commemoration of Eliza Greene Metcalf Radeke (1854-1931).
In this lecture, art historian Marianne Ruggiero will take a deep look into the original 1933 garden plan to explore its formal design, natural characteristics, and sculptural elements. The garden is not only a unique architectural feature of the Museum but a compelling expression of the genius of one revered woman.
