Theresa Ganz

Theresa Ganz alters images of natural and architectural structures digitally and by hand, prompting consideration of how our perceptions are transformed by

photographic reproductions. Storm Diptych presents video footage of hurricanes and smaller storms shot through a window and set to the first movement of Mozart’s String Quartet No. 19 (1785), known as the “Dissonance” quartet for its unusually modern atonality. Ganz’s imagery evokes the intense emotions and spiritual feelings inspired by 19th-century Romantic landscape painting. Distortion in the soundtrack, however, suggests the more fraught conditions of the present day, characterized by both the longing for and the destruction of the natural environment.

Ganz is an assistant professor of visual art at Brown University and a co-founder/co-director of the Regina Rex gallery (New York). Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions at Smack Mellon Gallery (Brooklyn), the David Winton Bell Gallery at Brown University (Providence), and in group exhibitions at the deCordova Museum (Lincoln, MA), Logan Center for the Arts (Chicago), Museum of Craft and Design (San Francisco), and other venues.
