About
Beginning in the early 19th century, landscape evolved into a popular theme in Japanese printmaking. This subject matter, which developed from older painting traditions, was transferred to the medium of woodblock printing, where richer, more innovative thematic content appeared. This exhibition will encompass depictions of famous places (meisho), including selections from the Museum's complete set of Hiroshige's Tokaido (Eastern Sea Route) prints and from Hokusai’s series of the Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji.
