Chinese Ceramics from the Museum's Collection

March 22 - May 26, 1996

Introduction

The installation in this gallery is the result of a joint effort between the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design and the Department of the History of Art and Architecture at Brown University. These cases contain a sampling of the Museum's permanent collection of Chinese ceramics from the Six Dynasties period (386-589) through the early Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Over the course of the spring semester, students in the Practicum class at Brown, in cooperation with the Museum's Department of Asian Art, have catalogued and researched the objects on display here. Information on the objects may be found in the notebooks located on the bench between the two cases.

The students have studied some of these ceramics extensively; their findings are entered as dated notes at the end of the individual object entries, which are arranged in numerical order.

To learn more about the larger groups to which these pots belong, please refer to the discussions of the various ceramic types (wares) arranged alpabetically at the end of the notebook.
