Poem: Yu sareba (translates to) When it becomes dusk, kadota no inaba (translates to) the autumn wind blows against otozurete (translates to) the huts thatched with reeds ashi no maroya ni (translates to) and pays its respects to leaves akikaze zo fuku (translates to) of rice plants before the gate.(transl. Keene, Seeds in the heart, p. 311)Mostow (see refs.) provides another translation: As evening falls,/through the rice-plants before the gate,/it comes visiting, and rustling/on the reeds of the simple hut-/the autumn wind does blow!Mostow also adds the syllable "fu" to the first word as it was understood to have been read in the Edo period but which does not appear on the print transcription or in other replications.
