In this print, Kitao Masanobu depicts Danjuro V (1741-1806) as one of the heroes of the Treasury of Loyal Retainers (Chushingura). This tale, known in an assortment of versions, recounts the efforts of the forty-seven masterless samurai (ronin) to revenge their lord's death. The inscription gives the actor's name and that of the person whom he is portraying.
