Marking the Occasion

September 15 - December 3, 2000

The plums identify the print as a New Year’s greeting, and the subject matter of the horse indicates that it was probably made for the year of the horse, 1822.

A Celebration of the New Year in Japanese Woodblock Prints

January 1 - March 1, 1990

The poem, wishing for happiness and prosperity in the New Year of the Horse, floats above a fine depiction of a hobby horse. The print follows the surimono tradition of giving life to inanimate objects and transforming small things into a larger presence.
