Hoitsu belonged to the Rinpa school of painting. The flat, decorative arrangement of plant forms and the juxtaposition of a poetic text inscribed in fluid cursive script are typical of that tradition. Here the printed forms are once again without outline. Bush clover (hagi) is one of the “seven grasses of autumn.”
