Intimacy reveals something deeply human in us. We need each other on a practical level, which means having to trust strangers. This drawing depicts David Hockney’s lifelong subject and lover, fellow artist Peter Schlesinger, whom he met in Los Angeles in 1966. It represents his style and sensibility as a draftsperson with its sparing use of line and shading against a neutral background.

David Hockney’s portraits often chronicle his life and close friends. This elegant drawing depicts the artist Peter Schlesinger (American, b. 1948), Hockney’s lover

at the time, while the two were on summer holiday. Hockney was Schlesinger’s drawing teacher at the University of California, Los Angeles, when they met in

1966; their relationship lasted about five years, during which Schlesinger was a frequent model. Hockney’s painting of Los Angeles can be seen in the 20th-century

installation just outside this gallery.
