Jahangir, whose name means "World Seizer," was the son of the great Mughal emperor Akbar and ruled India from 1605 until 1627. A devoted connoisseur, Jahangir reduced the size of the royal ateliers in order to maintain the highest levels of quality. This keenly observed portrait, showing the emperor with an archer's ring on his right thumb, was probably intended as a preparatory work for a more formal miniature painting.
