Manuel Álvarez Bravo was a contemporary of Mexican Muralists Diego Rivera (whose self-portrait is on the wall behind you) and José Clemente Orozco (whose
portrait by Edward Weston is far left). Juan Rulfo (Mexican, 1917–1986), who hailed from a slightly younger generation, had yet to write his acclaimed novels when this portrait was made. Nonetheless, Bravo seemed to sense his ambition, portraying him leaning forward from the edge of his chair with a look of intense engagement.
