Exhibition History

Edo Theater
The Drama of Kabuki
Jan 18, 2008 – May 18, 2008

Label copy

This album is a scrapbook assembled by a dedicated fan of the actor Onoe Tamizo II of Osaka. Most of the works were designed by Shunshi, an Osaka printmaker. This scene shows Tamizo watching his teacher, Onoe Kikugoro III (1784-1849), and another actor, Arashi Kitsusaburo II (1788-1837), exchange portraits in Kikugoro's dressing room. The diptych, by Tamikuni (n.d.), provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse of kabuki theater life. The opening image in the album depicts Tamizo asking his fans for support at the opening of the theater year.

Triptychs in Japanese Printmaking
Jun 06, 2003 – Aug 31, 2003

Label copy

Most of the prints in this album, a scrapbook with depictions of the Osaka Kabuki actor Onoe Tamizo (1799-1886), are by Shunshi, a printmaker also active in the city of Osaka. This page illustrates Tamizo in his dressing room, smoking and chatting with three other actors. Albums such as this one illustrate one way in which multi-panel prints were stored and used by their owners during the 19th century.
