A Matter of Tone

July 16 - October 31, 2004

The modesty of Peace’s downcast glance as she stands with laurel branch in hand contrasts with the lively stance of Abundance, who reveals her shapely legs and bust as she carries a cornucopia under her arm. The allegory may have been suggested by Guido Reni’s patron, Saulo Guidotti, whose coat of arms is depicted in the foreground and to whom this print is dedicated in the text at the left.
The blue color of the tone block echoes Reni’s favored blue paper for his drawings in charcoal and white chalk. Impressions were also printed in gray.
