A drawing of blue and graphite concentric circles that spiral outwards from a central point that is slightly off center. It makes the paper look like it’s dissipating.

Exhibition History

Perception and Presence in Contemporary Drawing
Mar 05, 2022 – Sep 11, 2022

Label copy

In this drawing, Shirazeh Houshiary achieves a great sense of depth through the almost obsessive repetition of circular forms. Untitled seems to dissolve into multiple dimensions, a signature of her style. Abstraction becomes spiritual and metaphysical in her work, a way to glimpse that which is fleeting and particular. Influenced by perception, science, and Sufi mysticism, she explains: “[W]hen you are conscious of the universe, you cannot focus on your own position, because it is no longer important. You are one little notch woven into this fabric of infinite existence.”
