Artists as Curators

In 1969, Andy Warhol was invited to curate Raid the Icebox I, an exhibition of works of art in the RISD Museum's collection. Scouring the museum's storage for his display, Warhol set in motion the now common place practice of artist as curator. This critical form of artistic inquiry thrives today, both within arts institutions and in artist founded exhibition spaces. The question of how, why and whether or not the artist is uniquely positioned to contribute across platforms of exhibiting and exhibition-making will be considered by Michelle Grabner, Ken Lum, and Anthony Graves, all artists, educators and writers. This conversation is moderated by Patricia Phillips, Dean of Graduate Studies at RISD, scholar and curator.
