The Celestial City: Newport and China, an exhibition on view at the Preservation Society of Newport County, explores China’s influence on Newport from the 18th century through the Gilded Age (1865-1915). Join us for a lecture with Dr. Nicole Williams, Curator of Collections at the society, who will share artworks that reveal the under-recognized influence of Chinese culture in Newport.

Dr. Nicole Williams earned her BA from Harvard College and her PhD from Yale University in the History of Art with a specialization in American art. Her work as a scholar and curator focuses on the global contexts for 19th-century American art, women’s histories, intersections between art and the law, and practices and theories of hand craftsmanship in the age of industry. Williams is the curator of The Celestial City: Newport and China, on view through February 11, 2024.
This program is presented in collaboration with the Pottery and Porcelain Club of Rhode Island and the RISD Museum.
