Exhibition History

Mountains and Rivers
Scenic Views of Japan
Jul 10, 2009 – Nov 01, 2009

Label copy

Fighting a gust of wind, two men hold onto their straw hats, while another chases his over a small bridge. Sadahiro, who worked in both Edo and Osaka, studied with Utagawa Kunisada and was part of the same artistic lineage as Utagawa Hiroshige, whose print depicting Yokkaichi, hanging nearby, he references here. Using his experience in drawing expressive kabuki actors, he emphasized the comic aspect of the travelers in his version.

Label copy

This print is made after Hiroshige’s famous scene to the right. Sadahiro compresses Hiroshige’s composition into a vertical format and enlarges the figure of the man chasing his hat, creating a powerful new image dominated by figures rather than landscape features.
