Innovation and Tradition in Native American Southwest Pottery

Merry Glosband’s talk will highlight contemporary Native American artists and their work with a focus on Southwest pottery traditions and innovations.

For almost 40 years Merry Glosband has been affiliated with the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) as a staff member and volunteer. She is an educator, writer, curator, and consultant. Her areas of research include Native American Art and Culture, the Art and Culture of Asia, Asian Export Art, and Professional Communications.
In 2001 at PEM, Glosband curated the exhibition Indian Market: New Directions in Southwestern Native American Pottery, which highlighted traditional and innovations in contemporary Native American pottery, showcasing the work of 19 artists. She continues to deepen her knowledge through attendance at Santa Fe’s annual Indian Market.
This program is presented in collaboration with the Pottery and Porcelain Club of Rhode Island and the RISD Museum.
The Pottery and Porcelain Club of Rhode Island, a membership organization, was founded in 1947 "to study and promote interest in pottery and porcelain." Scheduled meetings feature lectures by scholars and collectors as well as a study group led by scholars.
