Picture books, graphic novels, and narrative artworks are exciting tools for building deep literacy skills for students of all ages. Join picture book author-illustrator Gaia Cornwall and middle grade and young adult graphic novelist and educator Cathy G. Johnson to explore how to teach inclusively with image-rich texts and story-making activities.

About Teachers' Lounge: Consider topics, issues, and ideals related to teaching and learning with colleagues. Freely exchange and develop ideas in a relaxed and congenial environment. Join educators from across K-12, informal learning, and colleges and universities for aspirational conversations around topics of shared interest. Each Teachers' Lounge is facilitated by an invited guest who initiates the dialogue around relevant pedagogical issues.
Cathy G. Johnson is an artist, educator and creator of numerous comics and graphic novels. Her latest is a new middle-grade graphic novel titled The Breakaways (First Second). She holds a Masters degree in Teaching + Learning in Art + Design from the Rhode Island School of Design, is an experienced PreK-12 educator, and co-hosts the comics scholarship podcast Drawing a Dialogue. Gaia Cornwall loves to write and illustrate for children. Her debut picture book Jabari Jumps (Candlewick Press) was a Charlotte Zolotow Honor Book featured in The New York Times. Passionate about all kinds of kids recognizing themselves in literature, her upcoming titles include Jabari Tries and Best Bed for Me, (Candlewick Press), and A Unicorn Came to Dinner written by Lauren DeStefano (Roaring Brook Press).
